War routes, dearer credit, lives to protect

What lets people get on with life when routes, prices and access to help change together? The week beginning 14 September requires several answers: protection for crews and people fleeing Yemen, attention to credit costs, and recognition of a lower civilian toll in Ukraine without declaring people safe. Practical gains deserve space: families offer refuge, patients recover and searches advance. Responsibilities still need establishing too. Even a zoological discovery shows how better knowledge improves the question without magically settling what follows. This edition is a reconstruction written in October using sources eligible by 18 September 2026; it does not claim to have been written or published that week.

02 · The red thread

Our ideas must be breakable.

  1. Strengthened

2026-09-11 · The reconstruction covering evidence through 11 September, prepared on 19 October, acknowledged recovering exports without establishing safe passage free of contested permission.

Commercial recovery still fails to establish safe passage; escalation now threatens alternatives as well.

At the historical 18 September marker: unresolved for complete conditions and fees. Verified attacks strengthen safety concerns without establishing the fate of every voyage.

Compare documented merchant voyages with any transit agreement available by 2 October.

  2. Reframed

2026-09-04 · The reconstruction covering evidence through 4 September, prepared on 16 October, judged protection under pressure without measuring interception effectiveness.

August improves the monthly picture against July; lasting protection and the effect of new resources remain unestablished.

18 September marker: descriptive comparison completed. August is below revised July; long-range weapons remain central far from the front. This qualifies deterioration without proving lasting improvement or interception effects. The separate 28 August rescue/warning/shelter check remains unresolved by this tally.

Compare subsequent casualty data with documented deliveries and protection measures, separating correlation from effect.

  3. Reframed

2026-09-11 · The reconstruction covering evidence through 11 September, prepared on 19 October, documented response and information channels but not reconciled project-level accounting.

Searches and employer information advance; complete individual accounting and local warning effectiveness remain unestablished here.

At the historical 11 September marker, supplemented by evidence eligible through 18 September: partly answered. The statement dated 10 September specifies an estimate and contractor contact; the full register and effective replies remain unestablished. The separate 4 September cross-border-warning marker remains unresolved; WWA does not replace its timeline.

By 2 October, compare a reconciled project register with answers families actually received.

  4. Reframed

2026-09-11 · The reconstruction covering evidence through 11 September, prepared on 19 October, recognised expanded but saturated capacity and reported spread to Sud-Ubangi; local detection and payments remained unverified.

Reported decline in Ituri qualifies the previous picture, while North Kivu's growth calls for geographically adaptive response.

At the historical 18 September marker: unresolved without an inspected series using the required denominator. Ituri's decline improves the provincial assessment without answering this test. The 4 September protocol, 21 August Nizi/Bunia checks and public payment follow-up remain distinct and unresolved here.

In Nyankunde, compare the weekly share of new cases already registered as contacts before diagnosis, with a consistent denominator.

My drawer is not a laboratory

Column from a retrospective edition prepared on .

She is not a source. She is what happens after the sources finish talking.

I am writing this in October, staying with the news of 17 and 18 September. I have a funding request: support my drawer. La Región’s 17 September account describes researchers distinguishing five tiger-cat species using genomes, some obtained from museum specimens. My drawer contains three erasers, a dead battery and something I would rather leave unclassified. Enormous potential.

Fine. There is the work. Preserving samples, learning to read them, comparing evidence, spending years understanding why a small cat did not fit its label. Annoying: untidiness alone still fails to produce science. My grant application has just lost its main page.

The tilcayo already had a local name. I rather like this scientific courtesy: learning something new without announcing that the neighbours needed our permission to know their forest. Correcting a classification takes intelligence. Keeping other people in the story takes a little more.

Chester Zoo says recognition should help people research and protect these animals. Good. I want forests where this cat can carry on living while we improve our own lives. Not a magnificent civilisation that knows precisely what to call the thing it has just lost.

So I am keeping the drawer. But the money goes back to people who know what to do with old bones. Fuck, admiring expenditure is irritating.

The cat already had a life. Our job is to leave it room.
